The Eaton Fire ignited out on January 7, 2025, in Eaton Canyon near Altadena, California. Driven by strong Santa Ana winds, the fire spread quickly, scorching more than 14,000 acres and tragically claiming 17 lives. The inferno devastated nearly 10,000 structures, including homes and businesses, and led to the evacuation of thousands of residents.
Keller Rohrback - LOREM IPSUM Attorneys
At Keller Rohrback, we are more than “just lawyers.” We are empathetic people who understand the profound pain and devastation that wildfires can cause. We talk about it with our clients every day. Our dedicated team of wildfire attorneys specializes in providing comprehensive legal representation to individuals, businesses, and communities affected by devastating wildfires and are committed to helping our clients hold responsible parties accountable in order to obtain the compensation and justice they deserve.
Following a wildfire, you may have a variety of legal rights to pursue, from personal injury or loss of a loved one to property damage and loss of business income. Insurance rarely if ever can cover the full range of losses from a catastrophic wildfire. Common unaccounted for damages include, but are not limited to:
The devastating Southern California wildfire that began on January 7, 2025 in Altadena’s Eaton Canyon may have originated in equipment failure or mismanagement by the electric company Southern California Edison (SCE). The Hurst Fire ignited the same evening near the San Fernando Valley community of Sylmar.
The Washington Post reports that experts have determined there was electrical flow in transmission lines adjacent to Eaton Canyon’s hillside and nearby homes during a period of high wildfire risk caused by red-flag wind conditions. SCE issued a report on January 10 noting a downed conductor at a tower associated with a major circuit serving Sylmar on January 7. We expect ongoing investigations will focus on whether the electrical lines should have been powered down, as is the customary procedure for California utilities.
If you owned property or lived in the areas impacted by the Eaton or Hurst Fires and faced losses, damage, or evacuation, we are here to help. Keller Rohrback is a national leader in bringing litigation against the electric companies that spark devastating wildfires through mismanagement and negligence of their lines and equipment—indeed, we are one of only a small handful of firms in the nation to successfully take a power company to trial for starting a wildfire, and win. In our firm’s long history we have recovered more than $94 billion in settlement and judgements on behalf of our clients.
The Los Angeles fires have left countless people mourning the loss of their homes, livelihoods, and cherished memories. The Eaton Canyon fire has burned more than 14,000 acres and damaged or destroyed thousands of homes and the Hurst fire has burned almost 800 acres and forced the evacuation of more than 3,000 people. There has been a tragic loss of life, and the close-knit communities have been altered forever. Our firm knows, from our work on behalf of other wildfire survivors, that this has been a hugely traumatic event for the community, and that the road to rebuilding will be difficult and complicated. But if your home or business was destroyed or you lost valuable property, there may be a financial remedy beyond insurance coverage to help you recover.
