The 2026 Aspen Acres Fire

Ignited on the morning of June 29, 2026, near the Aspen Acres campground, the wind-driven blaze quickly became one of the largest in Colorado history. Fueled by sustained winds and gusts up to 100 mph during a National Weather Service Red Flag Warning, the fire scorched nearly 100,000 acres. The fire has so far damaged hundreds of structures and led to the evacuation of thousands of residents across southern Colorado.

Current investigations and lawsuits point to equipment failure by the San Isabel Electric Association (SIEA) as the potential cause of the blaze. Reports allege the fire originated when a tree limb contacted an SIEA powerline. Investigations are focusing on whether the utility failed to properly clear vegetation from its rights-of-way and why the electrical lines were not powered down despite the extreme wildfire conditions.
