Keller Rohrback is investigating reports that pet owners may be subjected to exorbitant price increases and pressured into paying for unnecessary veterinary tests and procedures. Historically, locally owned independent vet clinics provided accessible, medically necessary care for our beloved pets—and at a transparent price.
In recent years, however, corporate consolidators and private equity firms have purchased independent veterinary practices across the country. Often, these corporations keep the clinic’s original name, leaving pet owners completely unaware that their local vet is now corporate-owned. Following these takeovers, many clinics have implemented dramatic, arbitrary price increases—with overall veterinary care costs rising roughly 60% from 2014 to 2026.
Increasing consolidation has also made it more difficult for independent veterinary practices to compete against corporate-owned practices. Corporate consolidators wield advantages and influence that imperil the survival of traditional local clinics.
We are investigating whether these practices may violate federal antitrust and state consumer protection laws. Corporate consolidators may be illegally monopolizing local markets to eliminate affordable alternatives, while secretly implementing price increases.
