Keller Rohrback is investigating widespread misconduct, price inflation, and potential fraud in the "skin substitute" industry. Skin substitutes are medical products, often derived from placental tissue, used to treat severe, non-healing wounds, frequently in elderly and diabetic patients.
By allegedly taking advantage of regulatory loopholes, manufacturers may have artificially inflated the prices of these products for years. Reports indicate that between 2019 and 2025, the cost of skin substitutes skyrocketed from roughly $1,000 to up to $21,000 per square inch.
We believe these steep prices may be the result of exploiting the healthcare system. This misconduct has allegedly led to medically unnecessary treatments, compromised clinical judgment, and overbilling to private insurers, Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), and patients. Additionally, we are investigating whether companies improperly profited from pregnant patients who donated their placentas without adequate informed consent regarding the commercial sale of their tissue.
