Trucks and SUVs from General Motors brands allegedly contain defective sensing and diagnostic modules (SDMs). This issue impacts the deployment of both the airbag and seatbelt tensioner, in crashes that last longer than 45 milliseconds. GM has reportedly been aware of this defect since 1999. Since then, nearly 1,300 people have been killed or injured in front-impact collisions where the airbags in these GM vehicles did not deploy, according to data from the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration.
