Whirlpool Refrigerator Ice Build-up

On May 13, 2025, the Honorable Rita F. Lin entered final approval of a class action settlement of the matter captioned Paperno v. Whirlpool Corp., Case No. 3:23-cv-05114-RFL. The lawsuit resolves claims of consumers regarding Whirlpool-made refrigerators that experienced inadequate defrosting of the evaporator in the refrigeration compartment, which may cause periodic build-ups of frost and ice on the evaporator, impeding the refrigerator’s ability to cool food properly (called a “Frost Clog” Issue).

The settlement provides for cash reimbursement, up to $300 and subject to other limits, for documented out-of-pocket expenses to repair or replace your refrigerator’s evaporator, or to replace your refrigerator with a new model, due to a Frost Clog Issue occurring within eight years of your refrigerator’s date of manufacture (or purchase/delivery).
